S H Raza
Syed Haider Raza (b. 1922) is the founder member of the Progressive Artists Group (1947-1956) and the recipient of several awards and honors, including the Prix de la Critique (1956), Padma Shri (1981) and elected as a Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi (1983).
His paintings, which may be defined as geometric abstractions, centre on the symbol of the Bindu, thought to be the centre of creation in Hindu thought and the point from which thought and life diversifies.
In Raza’s paintings, the Bindu becomes the unit from which his canvases progress towards forms and colours and their reception in the viewer as a harmony of energy, space and time.
